Water Tower Art Fest in Sofia
A contemporary art festival built around reclaiming Sofia's abandoned and industrial spaces, starting with the derelict water tower in the Lozenets district that gave it its name in 2006, for temporary exhibitions, performances and public interventions. Since 2016 it has expanded into a decentralized residency program placing artists in smaller Bulgarian towns, and over two decades has involved more than 600 artists working largely outside the conventional gallery system.
An abandoned water tower in Sofia's Lozenets district gave this festival both its name and its founding act: in 2006 a group of artists cleared out the derelict structure and the overgrown lot around it, and kept coming back.
