Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival in Varna
First held in 1961 as the Bulgarian Film Festival, the Golden Rose is Bulgaria's oldest national feature film competition, now organized with the National Film Center and staged in Varna most autumns. After a relocated 1990 edition in Sofia, it returned to Varna in 1994 and has run there since, reaching its 44th edition by its most recent count. It screens new Bulgarian features, shorts and co-productions before a professional jury.
Bulgaria's national film industry has staged a feature-film competition in Varna since August 1961, when the event ran under the plainer name Bulgarian Film Festival and awarded its first prize to the drama We Were Young.
