Sao Vicente Children's Carnival in Mindelo
A dedicated children's parade in Mindelo, held ahead of Sao Vicente's main carnival days, in which school and neighbourhood groups march in costumes built by the island's established carnival groups through the same central streets used for the adult parades. The parade gives young marchers direct continuity with Mindelo's century-old carnival craft before they age into adult carnival groups.
More than a century of continuous carnival tradition in Mindelo makes room every year for a children's edition that runs ahead of the adult parades, giving the youngest generation of Sao Vicente's carnival groups a full parade of their own rather than a token appearance in the main event.
