Carnaval da Praia in Praia/Avenida Cidade de Lisboa
Carnaval da Praia parades annually along Avenida Cidade de Lisboa, named for Praia's town-twinning with Lisbon, with established costumed groups competing on themes increasingly centred on African identity, history and spirituality. The historic group Vindos d'Africa, tracing to a school founded in Bairro Craveiro Lopes in 1986, marked forty years of existence with a dedicated parade theme, while the carnival itself has weathered a documented two-year suspension before returning.
Carnaval da Praia stages its annual parade along Avenida Cidade de Lisboa, a street running through the Varzea, Achadinha and Chã de Areia neighbourhoods on the western edge of central Praia and named specifically for the city's official town-twinning with Lisbon, Portugal, giving the carnival's main route a direct diplomatic and historical reference built into its very name.
