The story

Kampot Readers and Writers Festival in Kampot

A literary festival founded in Kampot in 2014 as a sister event to Indonesia's Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, mixing free and ticketed panels, workshops, poetry slams, and book launches across venues in Kampot, Kep, and Phnom Penh. It pairs a literacy-advocacy mission with an emerging-writers showcase, New Cambodian Voices, giving it a more grassroots, education-driven character than typical expat literary gatherings.

Julien Poulson and a small team of Kampot-based writers and expatriates launched the Kampot Readers and Writers Festival in November 2014, billing it from the start as an official sister festival of Indonesia's Ubud Writers & Readers Festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's New Cambodian Voices forum is its most distinctive feature: an essay competition and mentorship track built specifically to place emerging Khmer-language writers, spoken-word performers, and first-time storytellers on the same programme as visiting international authors, rather than treating local participation as a side event

02

The mystery stays covered

Sessions run across a mix of ticketed and free venues, from formal panel rooms to informal riverside bars converted into reading spaces for a single night

03

The city starts moving

Programming has previously been organized around specific historical anchors, such as a strand built around the anniversary of the Paris Peace Accords, giving individual editions a thematic backbone tied to Cambodian history rather than a generic festival lineup repeated from other cities' literary circuits
