The story

Illuminated Float Parade Phnom Penh in Phnom Penh

The Loy Pratip is the nightly illuminated float parade of Phnom Penh's Bon Om Touk festival, in which ministries, companies, and provinces sponsor large barges decorated with elaborate lighted designs that drift along the riverfront after the daytime boat races end. Judges score the floats on craftsmanship and creativity, and the procession draws some of the festival's largest evening crowds along Sisowath Quay.

Each night during Bon Om Touk, once the daytime boat races along Sisowath Quay have wound down, Phnom Penh's riverfront takes on a different character as the Loy Pratip, or illuminated float parade, gets underway.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The float parade's institutional sponsorship structure gives it a distinct civic-pride dimension compared with the festival's other rituals: government ministries, state enterprises, and private companies compete for the best-designed float much as villages compete in the boat races, treating the outcome as a mark of institutional prestige

02

The mystery stays covered

As an evolution of older, smaller lantern and candle customs tied to the Water Festival's moon-worship traditions, the parade trades handheld lights for large-scale electrically lit barges, making it one of the more visually striking and camera-friendly elements of the festival for evening crowds who skip the early-morning boat races
