The story

Angkor Photo Festival in Siem Reap

The Angkor Photo Festival is a free, public photography exhibition held annually in Siem Reap since 2005, showing work from photographers across Asia in galleries, cafes, and nightly outdoor slideshow screenings around the old town. Now the longest-running photography event in Southeast Asia, it exists alongside the companion Angkor Photo Workshops training program, giving Siem Reap an unusually strong reputation within the region's documentary and art photography community.

A free, open-access photography festival has filled galleries, cafes, and public walls around Siem Reap each year since 2005, when a group of photographers created the Angkor Photo Festival as a platform for photographers working across Asia at a time when the region had few dedicated venues for documentary and art photography.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is its free, walk-in accessibility: exhibitions hang in ordinary cafes, guesthouses, and public spaces rather than ticketed galleries, and nightly outdoor slideshows project photographers' work onto screens for anyone passing by

02

The mystery stays covered

Its close pairing with the Angkor Photo Workshops, a tuition-free training program for emerging Asian photographers running the same week, means visitors often see both finished exhibition prints and behind-the-scenes work from photographers still mid-training

03

The city starts moving

Reaching a twentieth edition has made it a fixture of the regional photography calendar despite operating on volunteer labor and modest funding rather than major corporate sponsorship
