The story

Festi-Makossa in Douala

Festi-Makossa is Douala's annual celebration of makossa, the guitar-and-brass dance music that originated in the city in the mid-20th century and became one of Central Africa's most influential popular genres after Manu Dibango's global hit Soul Makossa. The festival brings together veteran makossa musicians, younger artists and dance troupes for concerts across the city.

Makossa emerged from Douala in the second half of the twentieth century out of a deep well of Sawa coastal musical practice, the ndolo funeral laments and ambasse bey guitar styles that had circulated along the Wouri estuary for generations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Makossa grew out of Douala's coastal Sawa musical traditions, absorbing ambasse bey and ancestral ndolo rhythms before developing into a fast, bass-driven dance style built around electric guitar, prominent horns and call-and-response vocals sung in French, Duala or Pidgin English

02

The mystery stays covered

Its global breakout came through Manu Dibango's 1972 track Soul Makossa, which carried the genre's name and groove into disco-era international charts and influenced artists far beyond Cameroon

03

The city starts moving

Festi-Makossa exists specifically to keep that lineage visible at home, pairing tributes to genre pioneers with performance slots for contemporary artists working in makossa-influenced styles, so the festival functions as both a heritage archive and a live talent pipeline
