The story

Mboa BD Festival in Yaounde

Mboa BD Festival is Central Africa's first and largest comics festival, created in 2010 and now in its sixteenth February edition across Yaounde's Monument de la Reunification and Goethe-Institut Kamerun. Each edition takes a theme, from environmental questions to wider cultural debates, and mixes author workshops, signings, a digital comics contest, cosplay competitions and exhibitions drawing artists from Cameroon, neighbouring countries, Morocco and France.

Mboa BD Festival gives Cameroon's comic artists something rare in Central Africa: a dedicated annual stage rather than a side slot at a general arts fair.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Mboa BD is specifically a comics festival, not a general arts or literature fair, and its status as the first such event in Central Africa gives it a genuine claim to regional significance

02

The mystery stays covered

The themed structure is distinctive: past editions have centred entirely on themes such as Environment in Comics, using graphic storytelling to address real-world questions rather than treating the theme as decoration

03

The city starts moving

A digital comics contest reflects a medium shift most African comics festivals have not yet built into their core programming, and the pairing of a two-site format, the Monument de la Reunification and the Goethe-Institut Kamerun, with international author participation from Morocco and France gives it unusual cross-border reach for a Yaounde event
