What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

CIFF's Academy Award qualifying status for short films, held since 2016, gives its top short-film winners a genuine path to Oscar consideration, a distinction few festivals of its size carry

02

The mystery stays covered

Programming deliberately spotlights Alberta-made film through a dedicated local section alongside its international narrative and documentary competitions, so visitors get a real sense of the province's own film industry rather than just a regional stop on a wider circuit

03

The city starts moving

Downtown venues sit close enough together that back-to-back screenings across different cinemas are realistic in a single day, and Behind the Screen programming adds director Q&As and meet-and-greets well beyond the scale a festival of Calgary's size might typically offer
