International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu
The International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, running since 1988, gathers well over a hundred hot air balloons on the Richelieu River about forty minutes from Montreal each Labour Day long weekend in early September. Beyond the mass ascents at dawn and dusk, the site runs as a full fairground with carnival rides, concerts and food vendors, and closes each evening with a synchronized, illuminated night glow display.
The International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu began in 1988 and has grown into one of the largest hot air balloon gatherings in North America, drawing well over a hundred balloons from Canada, the United States and beyond to a site on the edge of the Richelieu River about forty minutes southeast of Montreal.
