The story

Honda Celebration of Light in Vancouver

Three nights each summer, teams from invited countries choreograph fireworks over English Bay while Vancouver's beaches fill with spectators from midafternoon onward. Kitsilano, English Bay Beach and Sunset Beach become the city's biggest informal picnic grounds, with a flotilla anchored offshore and hillside vantage points across the West End and Stanley Park. The draw is scale: one of the largest offshore pyrotechnic displays staged anywhere in North America.

Three nights each summer, teams from invited countries take turns choreographing fireworks over English Bay while hundreds of thousands of spectators claim spots on Vancouver's beaches, seawall and hillsides.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What makes it distinctive is the barge-based format: fireworks launch from platforms anchored out on English Bay rather than from a single fixed structure, giving the show a panoramic spread that reads well from almost any beach or hillside around the bay

02

The mystery stays covered

Each competing country gets a full night, roughly 25 minutes of fireworks choreographed to a radio-broadcast soundtrack, so the same crowd can compare distinct pyrotechnic styles across the run rather than seeing one country's show in isolation

03

The city starts moving

The event also doubles as an informal city ritual: office workers leave early, families claim beach real estate by mid-afternoon, and the water itself fills with anchored boats watching from the exclusion zone's edge
