The story

Gerewol Festival in Chad in Chari-Baguirmi/Sahel camps

The Gerewol Festival in Chad brings together semi-nomadic Wodaabe, also called Mbororo, Fulani clans in remote camps across the Chari-Baguirmi region of the Sahel each dry season for a week of courtship ceremony and reunion. Young men paint their faces with ochre and adorn themselves elaborately to perform the Yaake beauty dance and compete for the attention of women judges, in one of the few annual gatherings that bring Chad's scattered Wodaabe clans together.

Across the Sahel belt of Chad, in the pastureland camps of the Chari-Baguirmi region, the Wodaabe people, a semi-nomadic branch of the wider Fulani ethnic group also known as Mbororo, gather each year for the Gerewol, a week-long ceremony of courtship, competition, and clan reunion.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Gerewol inverts familiar beauty-pageant conventions: it is young Wodaabe men, not women, who spend hours applying ochre pigment, elaborate face painting, and ostrich feather headdresses before performing the hypnotic Yaake dance, rolling their eyes and baring their teeth to display height, whiteness of eyes and teeth, and stamina, while women, often including senior or respected female judges, choose the most captivating dancers

02

The mystery stays covered

Because Wodaabe clans in Chad live dispersed and semi-nomadic across the Sahel for most of the year, following cattle and water sources, the Gerewol represents one of the only times the various clans gather together at all, making it as much a reunion and marriage market as a performance, with days built around dancing, singing, and clan-to-clan negotiation over marriage between different lineages
