The story

Festival DARY in N'Djamena

Festival DARY is Chad's flagship national culture festival, held for about a month each December and January at Place de la Nation in N Djamena since its creation in 2018. Each day of the roughly month-long program spotlights two of Chad's twenty-three provinces in turn, showcasing regional crafts, cuisine, music, and dance under high-level government patronage to promote national unity across the country's many ethnic groups.

Since 2018, the Chadian capital N Djamena has hosted Festival Dary, an annual cultural celebration built around a distinctive structural idea: rather than presenting a single national culture, the festival devotes each day of its roughly month-long run to a rotating pair of Chad's twenty-three provinces, giving every region of the country a scheduled turn to present its crafts, cuisine, music, and dance at Place de la Nation in the capital.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Chad is one of Africa's most ethnically diverse countries, and Dary is built specifically to make that diversity visible and legible in one place: rather than a single unified program, each day rotates through a different pairing of Chad's twenty-three provinces, giving smaller or more remote regions a guaranteed turn on a national stage in the capital

02

The mystery stays covered

Presided over personally by the head of state at its opening, most recently Marshal Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno for the seventh edition, the festival carries explicit political weight as a tool of national cohesion, with organizers and ministers describing it as belonging to all of Chad's tribes and components rather than a narrower cultural showcase
