What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets Copiapo's Candelaria apart is its close bond with the region's mining communities: many of the dance troupes are literally made up of small-scale miners who treat the festival as an annual act of thanksgiving to their patroness

02

The mystery stays covered

The devotion's origin story, a muleteer finding the image near the Maricunga salt flat in 1778, still shapes local memory of the sanctuary's founding

03

The city starts moving

The scale is also notable for a mid-sized desert city: close to a hundred thousand visitors during a celebration that unfolds over twelve days, with the final procession stretching four to five hours through streets packed with dancers, musicians and onlookers
