Fiesta de La Tirana in La Tirana
Fiesta de La Tirana is one of Chile's largest religious festivals, drawing several hundred thousand pilgrims to the small desert town of La Tirana in the Tarapaca region each July to honor the Virgen del Carmen. Rooted in Aymara Andean and Catholic syncretism, the week centers on bailes religiosos, costumed dance brotherhoods such as diabladas, morenos and chinos, performing in the streets around the church, day and night.
