Carnaval Mil Tambores in Valparaíso
Carnaval Mil Tambores is a grassroots street carnival held each October in Valparaiso, born in the 1990s as a community counter-celebration to Chile's official Columbus Day observances. Dozens of drumming troupes and murgas parade through the port city's streets and hillside neighborhoods, filling the old town with continuous rhythm. It keeps a participatory, countercultural character distinct from more formally organized municipal festivals elsewhere in Chile.
Carnaval Mil Tambores fills Valparaiso's streets each October with drumming troupes, murgas and community performers in a carnival that began as a deliberate counter-celebration rather than an official municipal event.
