The story

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival pairs an international dragon boat racing programme with a two-day waterfront festival on Victoria Harbour, tracing back to a nine-team invitational race staged off Shau Kei Wan in 1976. Corporate, community and national squad crews paddle marked harbour lanes to drummers' beats while a constructed sand beach, lion dances, game booths and beer-garden tents fill the adjoining shoreline for non-racing visitors.

In 1976, nine local paddling crews and a single visiting team from Japan raced off Shau Kei Wan in what became the first Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Invitational Races, an event that grew out of a conversation between a tourism association director and the head of a local fishermen's association about the paddling traditions already tied to the Tuen Ng Festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few dragon boat events pair serious international competition with a built-for-tourists shoreline carnival the way Hong Kong does: racing crews from national squads share the water with corporate and community teams, while spectators get a temporary sand beach, marching bands and beer tents rather than just a riverbank to watch from

02

The mystery stays covered

The Victoria Harbour setting is itself unusual, since most Tuen Ng dragon boat meets in mainland China run on rivers or lakes, not against a skyline of skyscrapers

03

The city starts moving

Hong Kong has also long gifted dragon boats to overseas rowing clubs, a practice that helped turn what began as nine local crews in 1976 into a genuinely international field
