Lusheng Festival Guizhou in Kaili/Qiandongnan
The Lusheng Festival celebrates the lusheng, a bamboo reed-pipe instrument central to Miao culture across Guizhou, with major gatherings held in Kaili and villages throughout Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. Traditional festival dates cluster around late September, when performers dance in circles while playing multi-pipe lusheng, accompanied by silver-jewelry displays, courtship singing and, in some villages, bullfighting.
According to Miao oral tradition, the world once suffered under nine suns that scorched the earth and threatened all life, until archers managed to shoot down eight of them.
