Lhasa Shoton Festival, the Yogurt Banquet, opens with a dawn thangka unveiling of a giant Maitreya Buddha image at Drepung Monastery before shifting to Norbulingka's summer palace grounds for the yogurt banquet, Tibetan opera performances, and traditional contests including yak racing, archery and wrestling. Its mid-11th-century origin lies in monks marking the end of a Gelug summer meditation retreat, and its date shifts yearly with the Tibetan lunar calendar.

Monks at Drepung Monastery once broke a summer meditation retreat, undertaken specifically to avoid accidentally treading on and killing small creatures during the rainy season when insect life is most active, by receiving guests and sharing bowls of yogurt, the origin, in the mid-11th century, of the festival Tibetans still call Shoton, combining the words for yogurt and banquet.
