Saga Dawa Festival in Lhasa/Mount Kailash

Saga Dawa is a month-long Tibetan Buddhist observance marking the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and parinirvana, peaking on the fifteenth day of the fourth Tibetan lunar month with intensified merit-making practices, kora, alms-giving, animal release and lamp-lighting, across Lhasa's Jokhang Temple, Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. Pilgrims travel specifically to complete kora around Kailash, believed to carry particular spiritual significance during this sacred month.

The fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar marks, according to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha all falling within the same sacred period, and Saga Dawa is the month-long observance built around that convergence, with its most significant day falling on the fifteenth of that month.
