Founded in 2001 by French photographer Alain Jullien with Chinese colleagues, the Pingyao International Photography Festival predates Pingyao's later film festival by sixteen years and fills repurposed courtyards, former factories, and warehouse spaces across the old town each September with exhibitions and photography book awards, drawing exhibitors from over 100 countries.

Sixteen years before Jia Zhangke brought a film festival to the same walled city, French photographer Alain Jullien co-founded the Pingyao International Photography Festival in 2001 alongside Chinese photography colleagues, making it one of China's oldest and longest-running photography events and giving Pingyao a photography tradition that predates its later film-festival fame by a considerable margin.
