Rebkong Thangka Art Festival in Tongren/Rebkong
Centred on Tongren, known in Tibetan as Rebkong, in Qinghai's Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, this festival showcases Regong art, a centuries-old thangka painting and metalwork tradition recognised as national intangible cultural heritage, still actively practised by around 30,000 artisans in villages like Wutun where nearly every household includes a painter.
In Wutun village, part of the Regong artistic heartland around Tongren in Qinghai's Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, it is said that nearly every household includes a painter, with roughly 30,000 artisans across the wider region still practising thangka painting and related metalwork skills passed down through generations rather than taught in formal academies alone.
