Hainan Li and Miao San Yue San Festival in Wuzhishan/Hainan
Marking the third day of the third lunar month, this Li and Miao festival across Wuzhishan and other central Hainan mountain counties combines antiphonal courtship singing, bamboo-pole and wood-chopping dance, and crossbow marksmanship contests, recognised as national intangible cultural heritage and increasingly framed locally as a rainforest culture week.
Antiphonal love songs traded across hillsides and streams, a bamboo-pole dance testing footwork and timing, a wood-chopping dance demonstrating strength and coordination, and crossbow marksmanship contests that draw genuine admiration from crowds all run through this festival, held each year on the third day of the third lunar month among Li and Miao communities across central Hainan's mountainous counties, including Qiongzhong, Baoting and Wuzhishan.
