The story

Bogota International Book Fair in Bogota

Founded in 1988 by the Colombian Book Chamber and Corferias, the Bogota International Book Fair, known as FILBo, is the second-largest book fair in Latin America, combining roughly a thousand exhibiting publishing houses with thousands of talks, workshops and presentations at the Corferias fairgrounds, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.

Twenty-six international writers and around 300 Colombian authors gathered for the first Bogota International Book Fair in 1988, an event organized jointly by the Colombian Book Chamber and the Corferias convention centre that has run every year since as one of the most important cultural gatherings in the Spanish-speaking world.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

UNESCO's decision to name Bogota World Book Capital in 2007, timed to coincide with FILBo's own 20th edition, tied the fair's growth directly to international recognition of the city's literary culture in a way few book fairs anywhere can claim

02

The mystery stays covered

Combining a genuine commercial marketplace, roughly a thousand publishing houses in recent editions, with an extensive parallel programme exceeding two thousand cultural and professional activities gives FILBo a dual identity as both trade fair and public literary festival

03

The city starts moving

Its status as the second-largest book fair in Latin America places it just below the region's single largest event in scale, a specific comparative ranking most national book fairs cannot claim
