The story

Caiman Cienaguero Festival in Cienaga

Rooted in the legend of Tomasita, a fisherman's daughter said to have been taken by a caiman on Saint Sebastian's Day, Ciename's January festival grew from an informal children's game into a national folk-dance competition and Intangible Cultural Heritage observance. Parades, food fairs, art exhibitions and concerts now run alongside the central caiman dance depicting the century-old legend.

The legend behind Ciename's caiman festival tells of Tomasita, daughter of fisherman Miguel Bojato and his wife Ana Carmela Urieles, who on Saint Sebastian's Day - 20 January, which also happened to be her birthday - went to wash her feet in a branch of the marsh near the Cachimbero neighbourhood, slipped, and was taken by a caiman; grieving neighbours built a caiman effigy from mangrove branches and carried it to the Bojato household accompanied by rows of dancers, a mourning ritual that over time turned into a celebration.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Colombian festivals trace their central dance directly to a specific, named local tragedy - the legend of Tomasita, taken by a caiman on her own birthday - rather than a generalised folk tradition or religious observance

02

The mystery stays covered

Its evolution from an informal children's wire-and-paper caiman game at the town bandstand into a formal national folk-dance competition among travelling groups reflects a documented shift from private community mourning-play to public performance over decades

03

The city starts moving

National Intangible Cultural Heritage designation formalises a continuity organisers describe as spanning more than a century
