Medellin Book and Culture Festival in Medellín
Founded in 2007 inside Medellin's Joaquin Antonio Uribe Botanical Garden, this ten-day festival has grown from a small booksellers' gathering into one of Latin America's notable literary events, with entirely free admission. Programming spans reading, music, theatre and visual arts staged among the garden's tropical plant collections rather than in a conventional convention-centre book fair setting.
Medellin's Fiesta del Libro y la Cultura began in 2007 as a comparatively modest gathering of booksellers trading inside the Joaquin Antonio Uribe Botanical Garden, at a moment when the city was still working to redefine its public image after decades of violence; few of its organisers expected it to grow into one of Latin America's major book events.
