The story

Medellin Flower Fair in Medellín

Medellin's Feria de las Flores, first held in 1957 when 40 silleteros from Santa Elena were invited to decorate the inaugural fair, now runs ten days each August timed to the city's 1813 independence anniversary, centred on the silletero parade, a Cultural Heritage tradition since 1974 built on a mountain carrying-frame once used to transport goods and people.

Forty flower-carriers from the mountain town of Santa Elena, invited to decorate the very first edition in 1957, are the origin of what has become Medellin's best-known annual celebration and its most visually distinctive parade: the Feria de las Flores and its silletero procession.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The silleta itself, the wooden flower-carrying frame at the parade's centre, carries a documented history stretching from colonial-era transport of goods and people over Antioquia's mountains to, historically, use in transporting enslaved people, a weight of history few purely decorative festival parades anywhere can claim

02

The mystery stays covered

Its 1974 declaration as Cultural Heritage of the Nation formally protects a tradition originating from specific, named flower-growers of Santa Elena rather than an anonymous folk custom

03

The city starts moving

The deliberate 1963 move to August to align with Medellin's 1813 independence anniversary ties the fair's modern calendar date to a specific historical commemoration rather than an agricultural or religious one
