Medellin International Tango Festival in Medellín

Medellin International Tango Festival marks the city's unusual claim on tango history: Carlos Gardel, the genre's most famous singer, died in a 1935 plane crash at what is now Olaya Herrera Airport. Since 2007, the festival has gathered dancers, musicians and cultural producers each June for milongas, concerts and workshops built around that legacy.

Medellin International Tango Festival exists because of an accident: on June 24, 1935, Carlos Gardel, tango's most mythologized singer, died along with sixteen others when his plane clipped another on takeoff from Medellin's old Las Playas airfield, now Olaya Herrera Airport.
