The story

Holy Week in Popayan in Popayan

Holy Week in Popayan is a UNESCO-recognized tradition of five nighttime religious processions held from Tuesday through Saturday before Easter, documented since 1556 and formally authorized by royal decree in 1558. Each procession, dedicated in turn to Mary, Jesus, the Cross, the Entombment and the Resurrection, carries ornate wooden statues, many dating from the late eighteenth century, along a two-kilometer historic route.

Holy Week in Popayan has been documented since 1556, when, according to local accounts, natives displaced from Peru who were conspiring against the city reportedly mistook the procession's torchlight for an approaching army and fled in fear, believing they had seen an endless line of spears and torches rather than a religious procession of penitents.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Latin American religious traditions carry documentation as early as 1556, or an explicit royal decree authorizing them, as this one received from King Philip II in 1558, giving Popayan's Holy Week an unusually well-documented colonial lineage

02

The mystery stays covered

UNESCO's 2009 designation as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity formally recognizes the tradition at a level few Colombian cultural practices reach

03

The city starts moving

The reliquary floats themselves, carrying wooden statues mostly dating from the late eighteenth century, are original historical artifacts rather than modern reconstructions, giving the processions genuine material continuity with the colonial period
