The story

Festival Bilili BD in Institut Francais du Congo

Bilili BD gathers comics artists, animators and game designers from across the Congo Basin at the Institut francais du Congo each December, pairing exhibitions and signings with master classes, editor meetings and a cosplay contest. Founded in 2016 by the Congolese cartoonist known as Elyon's, the festival is anchored at the Institut francais in Brazzaville, with editions that have also extended to Pointe-Noire, and has grown to draw guests from Francophone publishing houses in Europe.

Comics culture in Central Africa rarely gets a dedicated stage, which is part of why Bilili BD, founded in Brazzaville in 2016 by the cartoonist known as Elyon's and backed by the Institut francais du Congo, has grown into one of the region's more distinctive cultural fixtures.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Bilili BD's real distinction is treating comics as a full graphic ecosystem rather than a narrow hobby event: animation, digital art and video games share billing with comics pages, and the festival's editors' salon gives regional cartoonists direct access to Francophone publishing houses in Europe, turning a cultural festival into a working pipeline for artists rather than only a showcase

02

The mystery stays covered

Annual curatorial themes, super-heroes, transmedia storytelling, keep editions distinct from one another rather than repeating a fixed format, and the festival's roots with a single founding cartoonist give it a personal, artist-led character that larger institutional festivals often lack
