The story

Festival International SLAMOUV in Institut Francais/Salle Savorgnan

Mariusca Moukengue launched SLAMOUV as the first dedicated slam-poetry festival in the Republic of Congo, and by its fifth edition in May 2026 it had grown into a four-day international gathering at the Institut Francais du Congo. Poets travel in from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad and elsewhere to join Congolese performers for workshops, conferences and evening shows built around the spoken word.

Mariusca Moukengue built the Festival International SLAMOUV to give Congolese spoken-word poets something that did not exist before in the Republic of Congo: a dedicated stage of their own.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

SLAMOUV distinguishes itself as Central Africa's dedicated slam-poetry gathering rather than a general spoken-word sideline to a larger arts festival

02

The mystery stays covered

Founder Mariusca Moukengue built the program specifically to connect performers who had no shared stage before it existed, and the festival now pulls poets in from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chad alongside Congolese headliners

03

The city starts moving

Workshops sit next to conferences on professionalizing the scene, so newcomers gain skills the same week they might share a stage with an established name

04

The water draws everyone in

The pairing of poetry with live music at recent openings has become a signature rather than a novelty

Traditions & symbols

The language of the festival.

What moves first

Living ritual

Slam in Central Africa draws on oral storytelling traditions predating the written word

Water and renewal

Living ritual

The sacred route

Living ritual

so performances reward listening for rhythm and delivery as much as literal translation
