Poto-Poto Painting School Festival in Poto-Poto/Brazzaville

Pierre Lods founded the Poto-Poto School of Painting in Brazzaville in 1951 after his household worker Felix Ossali showed him an original, untrained painting style. The school's work reached the Museum of Modern Art in New York by 1956 and the Brussels World's Fair in 1958, an international trajectory that predated Congolese independence. Former students kept it running after Lods left in 1960, and it marked its seventieth anniversary with Institut Francais-backed events.

Pierre Lods, a young Frenchman with no formal art training of his own, founded the Poto-Poto School of Painting on the edge of Brazzaville in 1951 after watching his household worker, Felix Ossali, paint blue birds in a style Lods found startlingly original.
