Koni Raoni Festival Aitutaki in Aitutaki
Koni Raoni is Aitutaki's village-by-village New Year tradition, when a host community sends dancers and drummers along the island's roads between Boxing Day and New Year's Day to perform and collect donations. Villages take turns hosting, with proceeds funding local projects rather than a festival budget. It is informal, unticketed and deeply community-driven, drawing home islanders who return from overseas just to dance for their birth village.
On Aitutaki, the turn of the year belongs to the villages.
