The Rarotonga Open Game Fishing Competition launches from Avatiu Harbour, sending charter and local boats into deep Pacific water close offshore to target tuna, wahoo, mahi mahi and marlin over several competition days. Catches are weighed and photographed dockside as boats return each afternoon, drawing a social crowd even among visitors without a boat entry. Chartering a seat on a competing vessel is possible through local operators.
Every entry boat in the Rarotonga Open Game Fishing Competition leaves from the same small harbor: Avatiu, the working port on Rarotonga's north coast where interisland cargo ships, local fishing boats and charter vessels share the same narrow channel out to open water.
