Anuanua Pride Celebrations in Rarotonga
Anuanua Week is the Cook Islands' annual LGBTQ+ pride celebration, held in Rarotonga each April and organized by Pride Cook Islands and the Te Tiare Association. It marks the 2023 decriminalization of same-sex relations with a program of wearable arts competitions, a dedicated Pride art installation, theatre, dance and a small film festival, framed each year around a changing theme rooted in Cook Islands craft traditions like tivaevae quilting.
Anuanua Week grew out of a single anniversary: the Cook Islands decriminalized same-sex relations in 2023, and the following April, Pride Cook Islands and the Te Tiare Association turned the milestone into an annual celebration called Anuanua, the Cook Islands Maori word for rainbow.
