Juego de los Diablitos Boruca

Known as Cagru Rojc in the Brunka language, Boruca's Juego de los Diablitos re-enacts documented sixteenth-century Spanish-conquest resistance through masked diablito performers battling a bull-costumed figure representing the conquistadors. Held from 30 December through 2 January under the ritual leadership of a Diablo Mayor, it was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Costa Rica in 2017 and stands alongside a related, separately staged observance in the neighbouring community of Rey Curre.

The Juego de los Diablitos, known in the Brunka language as Cagru Rojc, is one of the principal festivities of the Boruca indigenous people, whose resistance to Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century was documented directly by conquistador Juan Vazquez de Coronado, who recorded fortified Boruca settlements and fierce combat during his campaigns.
