Dia Nacional del Calypso in Cahuita
Established by Law No. 9612 in 2018, Costa Rica's National Calypso Day falls on 7 May, the birthday of Walter Ferguson Byfield, the Cahuita-based calypsonian known as Mister Gavitt who recorded his own compositions on cassette tapes sold directly to visitors. The first observance in 2019 coincided with what would have been his hundredth birthday, and Cahuita is widely regarded as the cradle of Costa Rican calypso because of his decades there before his death in 2023 at 103.
Costa Rica's National Calypso Day was created through Law No.
