Dia Nacional del Boyero Canas in Canas

Dia Nacional del Boyero in Canas honors Costa Rica's oxcart-driving tradition with a parade of more than twenty painted carts through the town's main streets each March, marking a canton whose oxcarts once hauled cargo twice weekly to the river port of Bebedero before the Inter-American Highway replaced that route in 1952.

More than twenty painted oxcarts, some loaded with wood or sand as they would have been generations ago, still roll through the main streets of Canas each year for Dia Nacional del Boyero, the day Costa Rica set aside by executive decree in 1988 to honor its oxcart drivers.
