The story

Festival Estudiantil de las Artes in Costa Rica schools

Founded in 1976 as Costa Rica Joven by Wilberth Alpirez and Wilberth Villegas, this national student arts programme has changed names several times - through Festival de la Creatividad and FENEA - before settling on FEA to distinguish it from the separate Ministry of Culture's FIA. A decades-old national institution, it organises more than fifty artistic disciplines across performing, musical, literary and visual arts, with national stages drawing more than 18,000 participating students.

Costa Rica's Festival Estudiantil de las Artes began in 1976 under the name Costa Rica Joven, created by Wilberth Alpirez and Wilberth Villegas with the explicit aim of expanding access to the arts through public education, treating artistic expression as a genuine pedagogical need rather than an optional extra.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few student arts programmes anywhere maintain decades of continuous operation across multiple name changes while keeping the same underlying public-education mission of treating art as a pedagogical need rather than an optional extra

02

The mystery stays covered

Organising more than fifty distinct artistic disciplines across four broad categories gives students an unusually granular range of specific competitive categories rather than a handful of generic arts options

03

The city starts moving

Drawing more than 18,000 students to its national stage in a single documented year reflects a scale of participation placing it among the largest school-based arts programmes in Central America
