The story

GuanacasteArte in Guanacaste province

GuanacasteArte began in Liberia in 2008 as a rotating visual-arts festival, moving between cantons including Hojancha, Abangares, La Cruz, Bagaces and Tilaran in different years, and has since folded into the larger Festival Internacional de las Artes, FIA, which in recent editions has spread across all eleven Guanacaste cantons with concerts, dance, theater, craft fairs, film and traveling caravans.

GuanacasteArte began in Liberia in 2008 as a visual-arts festival and has since traveled between different host cantons in different years, including Hojancha, Abangares, La Cruz, Bagaces and Tilaran, giving it a rotating rather than fixed home unlike most single-town Costa Rican festivals.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike most Costa Rican festivals tied permanently to one town, GuanacasteArte rotates its host canton year to year, having been staged in Liberia, Hojancha, Abangares, La Cruz, Bagaces and Tilaran at different points, a documented structural difference from single-location events elsewhere in this dataset

02

The mystery stays covered

Its evolution into a founding strand within the larger, province-wide Festival Internacional de las Artes, which has run intermittently and in some editions covered all eleven Guanacaste cantons, means the festival's scale and reach have grown well beyond its 2008 origins as a single-town visual-arts event
