Baile de la Yeguita in Nicoya

Performed each 12 December for the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Nicoya's Baile de la Yeguita re-enacts a local legend in which a mare miraculously separated two feuding brothers after devotees invoked the Virgin. Four fixed roles - the mare, a flute player, a drummer and a dancer presenting the Virgin's image - carry out a tradition blending Spanish colonial and Chorotega indigenous cultural expression, with more than 350 years of local history.
