Carnaval Nacional San Jose in San José

Held each 27 December, the day after the Tope Nacional horse parade, San Jose's national carnival features comparsas, antique cars and exotic costumes, but had lapsed for eleven years - overshadowed by the Festival de la Luz launched in 1996 - before the city's Comision de Fiestas deliberately revived it in 2016. Recent editions have paraded around ten comparsas and five rhythm bands alongside clowns, mascaradas and stilt-walkers through central San Jose.
