Festival Internacional de las Artes in San José
Created through a 1995 restructuring of Costa Rica's Festival de las Artes into alternating International and National editions, this festival brings foreign artists to San Jose every other year, alongside separate national-only editions. Recent stagings at Parque Metropolitano La Sabana have drawn several hundred artists from more than a dozen countries across theatre, dance, music and visual arts, with the large majority of programming free or symbolically priced.
Costa Rica's Festival Internacional de las Artes traces to a 1995 restructuring of the country's long-running Festival de las Artes programme, when the Ministry of Culture and Youth split the event into two alternating formats: an International Festival drawing artists from around the world in one year, and a National Festival spotlighting Costa Rican talent specifically the next.
