The story

Transitarte San Jose in San José

Organised by the Municipality of San Jose since 2004, Transitarte takes its name from combining transitar (to move through) with arte (art), converting the capital's Parques Nacional, Espana and Morazan into free, open-air stages for music and visual art. In recent editions it has drawn a projected 300,000 attendees and more than 200 artists across an expanded footprint through the city's historic centre.

Transitarte, organised annually by the Municipality of San Jose since its founding in 2004, takes its name from a deliberate wordplay combining transitar, to move or walk through, with arte, art, encapsulating the festival's core premise: encouraging residents and visitors to physically move through the city's public spaces while encountering open, participatory art rather than viewing it in a gallery or theatre.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Transitarte's explicit premise of reclaiming central civic parks rather than staging in a purpose-built or ticketed venue treats the festival as much as an urban public-space statement as a cultural event

02

The mystery stays covered

Its stated philosophy that culture belongs to everyone shapes a genuinely zero-cost admission model sustained across nearly two decades, rather than a promotional free-entry gesture for a single edition

03

The city starts moving

Growth to a projected 300,000 attendees in recent editions, with programming space physically expanding compared to earlier years, reflects documented, sustained scale growth within one of San Jose's most congested urban cores
