The story

Lastovo Carnival in Lastovo

Lastovo's Poklad carnival reenacts a centuries-old island legend of captured pirates through a straw effigy burned in the days before Lent, a UNESCO-recognized custom protected by Croatia's Ministry of Culture since 2008 and rarely witnessed by outsiders given the island's remoteness. Residents themselves fill every role in the procession.

The Poklad carnival of Lastovo is built around a specific legend: that Catalan pirates once attacked neighboring Korcula and sent a messenger to Lastovo demanding surrender, only for the islanders to arm themselves, capture the messenger after a storm destroyed the pirate ships, parade him mockingly through the village on a donkey, and ultimately burn him in effigy.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Poklad effigy is built with its feet filled with sand from the local cemetery, a specific and unusual detail tied directly to the founding legend about a captured pirate messenger, distinguishing it from generic carnival effigy-burning traditions elsewhere

02

The mystery stays covered

The crowd's shout of Uvo three times at the moment of burning is itself a documented, protected element of the custom, not an improvised or informal addition to the ceremony, and the entire sequence is performed by residents themselves rather than hired actors or outside performers
