The story

Pula Film Festival in Pula

The Pula Film Festival, established in 1954 after a successful 1953 trial screening drew fifty thousand people, is Croatia's oldest and largest film festival, held each July or August inside the ancient Pula Arena. Halted in 1991 by Yugoslavia's breakup, it resumed in 1992 as a festival of Croatian film.

Fifty thousand spectators packed the Roman-era Pula Arena in 1953 for a revue of foreign film hits organized by Marijan Rotar, an event that, despite its own technical difficulties, demonstrated enough demand to launch the Pula Film Festival proper the following year in 1954 inside the same amphitheater, built between 27 BC and 68 AD and later enlarged under the emperors Vespasian and Titus for gladiatorial combat.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's venue, the Pula Arena, is a Roman amphitheater built between 27 BC and 68 AD and enlarged for gladiator fights under Vespasian and Titus, meaning films are projected onto a screen within nearly two-thousand-year-old stone walls rather than a purpose-built cinema, a setting unmatched by almost any other film festival worldwide

02

The mystery stays covered

Watching a film on tiered stone seating built roughly two thousand years ago, with the amphitheater's surviving outer wall visible above the screen, gives Pula a physical setting no conventional multiplex or purpose-built festival venue can replicate, tying the city's film culture directly to its Roman heritage
