Split Festival in Split

Splitsko ljeto, founded in 1954 and managed by the Croatian National Theatre in Split, fills Diocletian's Palace and nearby venues with a month-long programme of opera, drama, ballet and orchestral concerts each summer, alongside jazz, film and visual art events. It ranks among the longest continuously running festivals in Croatia's performing arts calendar.

Splitsko ljeto, the Split Summer Festival, was founded in 1954, a period when Split was rebuilding its cultural institutions in postwar Yugoslavia and when staging professional opera, drama and music in the open courtyard of Diocletian's Palace was both a practical choice, since the ancient Roman space was already there and free to use, and a symbolic one, tying the city's contemporary artistic life directly to its Roman inheritance.
