Vukovar Film Festival in Vukovar
Founded in 2007 by Igor Rakonic, Vukovar Film Festival runs five or six days each late August, screening films from Danube-region countries including Austria, Hungary, Serbia and Romania. Early editions used a barge moored on the Danube as a cinema before moving to a CineStar theater from the eighth edition onward.
Vukovar Film Festival was founded in 2007 by Igor Rakonic, with backing from the city's then-mayor Zdenka Buljan, who recognized the cultural value a dedicated film event could bring to a town still visibly marked by the destruction it suffered during the 1990s war, when Vukovar, on the Croatian bank of the Danube, was almost entirely leveled during a prolonged siege.
