The story

Animafest Zagreb in Zagreb

Animafest Zagreb, established in 1972 after Zagreb's animation industry earned international acclaim through the mid-century Zagreb School of Animated Films, is the world's second-oldest animation festival after Annecy. It ran biennially through 2004, added annual feature-film editions from 2005, and merged short and feature strands into one event in 2015.

Animafest Zagreb owes its existence to the international acclaim the Zagreb School of Animated Films earned through the 1950s and 1960s, acclaim strong enough that when Zagreb put itself forward to host a permanent animated-film festival at the 1969 ASIFA meeting in London, the International Animated Film Association accepted the city's bid, leading to the festival's establishment in 1972.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Animafest's first edition was officially billed as the ninth World Festival of Animated Film, directly linking it to France's Annecy festival lineage, and its programming still draws on the specific artistic tradition of the mid-century Zagreb School of Animated Films that earned the city its original international animation reputation

02

The mystery stays covered

Its 2007 transition to management by the private production company Hulahop also marked a deliberate shift toward balancing the festival's mid-century artistic short-film heritage with the commercial and feature-length demands of a modern animation industry, a tension distinct from festivals that never needed to bridge such different eras
